Do you currently need major dental care work to be done? If so an HMO dental insurance plan may be best for you since they normally do not have long term waiting period before benefits are made effective.    

Do you need to see a specialist such as a pediatric dentist for your young kids or an Endodontic dentist  for a root canal etc. If so you want to make sure the plan you are buying provides benefits for specialist not all dental insurance plan do.
